The origins of mirin date back to the Muromachi period, and it is said to have originated as a sweet alcoholic beverage that was originally introduced from China.

This developed uniquely in Japan and was popular as a sweet, high-class alcoholic beverage during the Edo period.

It was especially popular among women and those who could tolerate less alcohol, and was sometimes treated as "onnazake" (women's drink) to be drunk as is.
